The irony is not lost on me that we are using a Google map to plot the locations of businesses that avoid paying their taxes*. My android phone and subscription to EE all speak loudly of how enmeshed we are in a system that makes us complicit in a system that harms and exploits even as it creates innovative services. Google is in many respects a wonderful company that has created invaluable goods and services – but is that a reason to pay no taxes? They are dependent on a healthy educated workforce to create the goods and services they sell – and health and education are largely tax funded  public goods.

Will other companies also claim that because they create jobs, sell unique products and donate to charity, that they too should be exempt from paying any tax?
